Just bought a cheap Frontera for the wife and towing the caravan, problem is there was no info/manuals with the car and I have not got a clue how the 4 x 4 system works, plus some other stuff.

Has anyone got a spare owner manual for a 2000 W Reg 2.2 DTi model or alternatively please help with the following:

1. How does the 4 x 4 system work?

2. Can the passenger airbag be deactivated for the child seat?

3. What is the button on the dash that has a man running away and a red LED in it?

All help appreciated.

Call me a knob if you want but I'm not the one who can't work out how to operate the 4X4..... ;\)

Has it got a 4X4 selector lever and is there a keyed switch in the glove box?

No keyed switch in glovebox (I presume this is the Airbag switch)

There is a button on the dash with what looks like a 4 x 4 symbol and the there is a 2nd gear know with high and low.

The reason I am asking is cause I need to know if it is in permanent 4x4 and you select high or low, or does the button on the dash select the 4x4 mode, then you move the 2nd gear knob (diff).

Father in law says something like when in 4x4 mode you are only supposed to go in a straight line????????

I should have known better, asking a serious question on the Lancashire Football Forum.

Check all around and under the dash area for a keyed switch, finally check under the bonnet, then phone up the service dept at a Vauxhall dealership and ask them; but it sounds to me me like you can't disable it.....not uncommon on older cars.

Press this button to switch 'On The Move' between 2WD and 4WD.....On most stuff you can switch at speeds up to about 60mph but I'm not 100% sure on the Frontera.

Use this lever to select between high (normal) and low ratio gears. DON'T DO IT ON THE MOVE make sure the vehicle is stationary and depress the clutch whilst changing. Generally unless you go off road ie. through a forest or some really deep mud you shouldn't need this ratio. My advice to you as a Frontera owner would be to stay as far away from going off road as you possibly can.

No, going round corners is what 4 WD is all about....ask anybody who drove an AUDI Quatro in the 80's.
He and you are both thinking about locking the differential up (Diff lock!)which effectively locks two wheels (sometimes all 4)together, evening out the power going to each wheel. It's not recommended to drive with the diffs locked on a surface with good traction because of possible mechanical damage and poor handling. If you can imagine as the vehicle try's to turn the corner the wheel on the outside of the curve must travel further than the wheel on the inside, locking the differential prevents this from happening and both wheels must turn at the same rate. This leads to the vehicle 'crabbing' round corners and as mentioned previously increases wear on the tyres and the possibility of mechanical damage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, I presume the quoted MPG figures are usually with the vehicle in 2 wheel drive? Do they drink alot in 4x4 mode?

Does that mean that there is no Diff lock on a Frontera? and therefore I can switch 4x4 on and off at my leisure as long as I do it under 60mph?

I don't think you'll notice much difference if any....

It doesn't sound like there's a Diff lock fitted on yours, I don't think they fitted them to Fronteras....usually there'll be a pretty prominent warning notice displayed inside the vehicle advising you of when to use the Diff lock and when not to.
