As per above,Powershot G4/G5/G6 are quality bits of kit in terms of compactness, quality of photo and ease of use for self shots.

If you regularly fish alone and want to do self shots then nothing comes close to the practicalities of the above camera's.

Flip screen/remote activation makes self shots safe and hassle free. Digital SLR's will offer better quality shots but unless you're blowing photo's up to huge sizes the G6 will more than suffice.

Another point with digi SLR's,they're great tools, if used properly. Put one in the hands of a donut and you're shots will not be as good, a self shot with a Powershotwould probably fair better!

They go on ebay for about £150-£180 these days too...

That's my point, most people will never get the best out of their slr and will simply flick it onto auto without any idea of exposure , aperture, etc.

The OS in the EOS is identical to the OS in the Powershot, thus, the 'auto' mode is the same, THUS, you would have to do something pretty drastically wrong to get a 'bad' shot on an EOS slr. Auto mode on the EOS is exactly that. It's complete point and shoot. I know, I bought a DVD that told me!

I have a good DVD here, that takes you through the EOS. Very useful! I even know what AWB is now and understand he idea of manual shutters. Wow. I'm a pro!

Before the Powershot was shown to me I would lug about an EOS 50 slr,28-80 lens, flash unit, filters, cable release etc which looking back seems totally OTT but it was nice to do some scenic stuff whilst blanking.

Once I bought the Powershot it was a massive relief as the rucksack was now a third lighter. Seeing as though most trophy shots are a subject against a fairly drab background, the need for zoom lenses with mega wide apertures are not needed.

Therefore if you are simply looking for a compact tool to take trophy shots and have suffered from that awful case of dog walker decapitation (where a non angler does some photos for you and lops your bonce off) the Powershot is perfect-picture quality is still outstanding once the user is familiar with the flash settings, etc.

If you're into photography and want the whole kingfisher on the rods/dawn mist sunrise scenic shot thing then a DSLR will open up more opportunities for you with regards to creativity.

Self shots, although not as convenient as flip screen usage, are still easier with a DSLR than the old style film SLR'. As mentioned if the pixel rate is big enough, you can simply over frame leaving lots of margin for error and then crop down to an acceptable size.

I've found the Powershot with something like Photoshop to be spot on,you can take a boring normal 'rods' shot and tweak it,blur the background out to mimic a wide aperture and change skylight colours, sunsets etc.

The Canon G6 is still the muts nuts for fishing shots.

Had a Canon DSLR and got rid for the G6, now much happier as I have more functionality and a lighter more compact setup.

As someone as pointed out with the dog walker situation, unless you have a budding David Bailey with you fishing all the time, what is the point in an expensive bulky DSLR.

I got my G6 off ebay for about £150, several month ago, and most were going for that sort of money then, may be a tad cheaper now.

Just think what you could treat yourslf to with the spare £350.

Thanks for replies

I have made up my mind to go for the G6. It’s a shame that there is no DSLR option because I would enjoy playing around with one whilst camping at Horton. This will replace the Nikon Coolpix (flipscreen, no remote) that has been awful. It keeps breaking down.

The main reason I wanted a remote was that using a timer for self take shots was taking to long, resulting in me feeling uncomfortable about the fish being out of the water to long (especially with pike). With the remote I feel the whole operation could be done in 60 seconds.

The flip screen gives me added confidence that the shots are OK. I have been doing self take shots with all sorts of cameras for the last 12 years. After a while I found that I could just attach the camera to a bank stick and know exactly where I should be posing with the fish. Thanks to digital cameras the days of packing up and racing to get the photo’s developed with my heart in my mouth are long gone.
