I want to buy a digital camera with a remote control and flip/swivel screen,

It’s proving to be a bit of a challenge!

Is a second hand cannon g5 or g6 STILL really the best option?

I have found one for sale but thought I should check with you lot before parting with cash.

Any advice about camera's I could buynew or reviews or the g5,g6 would be gratefully received.

How much do you have in your budget?

Don’t know exactly,

I would spend out on decent SLR or make do with a decent compact.

Quality is the issue rather than cost.

Up to £500 pounds (ish)?

A DSLR is wasted on fishing photos. A good bridge camera is more than adequate and will give comparable results to the EOS, they're also a lot cheaper. It's only when you have huge phallic symbol lenses costing over a grand that the DSLR takes over.

The screen on a Panasonic fz50 flips down but doesn't swing round so the tripod may get in the way oof the screen but if you can cope with portrait orientated shots for self takes you'll be fine.

I must caevat this response with the key fact that I don't profess to know the specifics between cameras but I know that my old Canon Powershot s45 (that was 500 quid about 5 years ago) cannot touch my new EOS 400d that was £370 - 45 quid cash back, ie, £325 including a lens.

I would advise one the 400ds purely on price/performance and expandability. The cost now is compact camera territory.

So, from my 'ignorant' eye, I would certainly say the newly priced EOSs offer excellent value for money. The ability to control aperture priority and shutter speeds to the nth degree open up the camera to a whole new level. But the real benefit is in the size of the sensor. A dSLR has a bigger sensor than a compact and that's where the quality comes in. It's a fact that simply cannot be ignored. It affects the quality of the shots so much, irrespective of megapixels and anti-aliasing effects employed, once the 4Mp barrier is hit. So if true quality is the intended goal, anything outside of even a budget SLR is contriving your intention.

Have fun choosing!
