This week the fishsiam team was joined by emminent fish biologist Dr.Zeb Hogan(megafishes project)and Nat Geo news writer Stefan Lovgren in search of Giant freshwater stingray.Over a four day period the team landed four individual specimens with estimated weights to 130-140kg(1.75m).A large female was observed to be heavily pregnant after capture and whilst being handled in the margins gave birth to a live new born measuring a mere 34cm.The fish were promptly returned to the river together after a short examination by Dr.Hogan and photography. The entire events were captured on video which will be released in the coming weeks. We believe this to be the only recorded Giant freshwater stingray birth in a natural and wild enviroment ever and an encouraging sign for such an understudied and obscure species. We will be continuing our efforts on the Ban Pakong River in the coming months. The team has already accounted for 25 individual specimens in a period of ten months from two of Thailands wildest and unexplored river systems.

We have finally managed to get some Giant freshwater stingray footage onto youtube. The footage is of an extremely poor quality and shows a large giant freshwater stingray that the fishsiam team grounded on the banks of the Ban Pakong river some months ago.We estimate this fish (2.2m)to weigh in the region of 180-200kg.The fish was beaten after an epic six hour battle which required fifteen anglers to tame the mighty beast. Look at the size of the barb on the thing!!This was the second fish of the day with the team catching an estimated 120kg specimen earlier in the day.We are currently editing much better High definition footage which we will be appearing on our site in the coming weeks.

The Giant freshwater stingray is listed as threatened on the IUCN red list. The reason for this is that there has been little to no research or captures conducted on this species. The GFS was first formally described in 1989.Surveys previously conducted throughout Thailand by concerned bodies such as the WWF have yielded two or three reported captures per year.I think the fishsiam team has shown that there is a much healthier population than previously believed that is in fact successfully breeding. We have landed 25 different specimens in just under a year from the Ban Paklong and Maeklong Rivers here in Thailand.Dr.Zeb Hogan shares this opinion and states this in the national geographic.com article concerning GFS.I have just purchased some 300kg scales which we intend to accurately weigh one of these monsters.I will be putting more video footage on youtube in the coming week's featuring more GFS caught by the team.
