I can't believe this. Who really gives a sh*t about the fate of some scraggy hens. They exist to provide us with food, then they die and end up in a Mc Chicken minced up carcass burger or whatever they are called. And no I don’t mean chickens as a species exist to provide us with food, just the ones reared by man for food. Who cares if they are stuck in a little cage with no ground to scratch or worms to dig up? I don’t, I have much more burning issues to occupy my mind such as what colour socks should I wear today, T Shirt or Jumper, kebab on Pita or Nan? If all you have to worry about is the standard of accommodation enjoyed by our nations hens then god help you if you end up with something really serious to worry about. The worlds going mad we are turning into a load of pampered tree huggers.
Well said Mr J.
kind regards Jeff

I do not agree with the new rules.... cage them and produce cheap eggs..... at the end of their short, unhappy life, give them to Dazzle to barbecue.... not getting on my high horse but i wonder if you have ever seen (not on tv )the distgusting conditions these hens are kept in and the state of the hens themselves. my mrs keeps hens and has had rescued battery hens you may find your attitude would change if you saw them ! as for the cost i reckon the price of free range will drop from what they are now but they will be more expensive than battery eggs.but like everything the cost will just filter down to the public the battery eggs are cheap there also tasteless
Agreed on all counts, and even as Battery hen Eggs the product is overpriced. As for Battery Hens the end of their life, sorry they don't normally make it onto the Human food market. Older Hens and the meat is too tough. Maybe into Animal Feed, but not the Human Food Market. It is possible to get farmed Hen eggs from many grocers which are actually cheaper than Eggs from Supermarkets.
For a long time we have been forcing animals into situations that are not their Natural Surroundings in an attempt to try to improve or speed up production and it is starting to backfire, both in the fact that the product is not as good or as healthy as naturally grown. Consciences as a whole are starting to be tapped, and the whole Money first attitude is being shown to be wrong.
I may have had disagreements with Dean in the past but in this case he is totally right. It will have an impact on Anglers and Baits, even some of the Whole Egg Replacers will become difficult to get hold of as some are actually Dried Egg. There are some egg replacement products available, and I can find a breakdown on some later.

This is from another forum and I reckon the poster will allow me to post it here
Egg Replacements There are plenty of egg substitutes available for baking or preparing a dish that calls for eggs. Ener-G Egg Replacer is a reliable egg substitute for use in baking. It is available at health food stores and most grocery stores.
Tofu: Tofu is great for egg substitutions in recipes that call for a lot of eggs,
you can substitute one of these egg alternatives. Each of these replaces one egg
1 teaspoon baking powder + 1 tablespoon liquid + 1 tablespoon vinegar 1 teaspoon yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water 1 1/2 tablespoons water + 1 1/2 tablespoons oil + 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 packet gelatin + 2 tablespoons warm water (don't mix until ready to use) 1 Tablespoon pureed fruit such as apricots or bananas
For other Setting Agent there are alternatives:
Typical gelling agents include natural gums, starches, pectins, agar-agar and gelatin. Often they are based on polysaccharides or proteins.
Examples are:
Alginic acid (E400), sodium alginate (E401), potassium alginate (E402), ammonium alginate (E403), calcium alginate (E404) - polysaccharides from brown algae
Agar (E406, a polysaccharide obtained from red seaweeds)
Carrageenan (E407, a polysaccharide obtained from red seaweeds)
Locust bean gum (E410, a natural gum from the seeds of the Carob tree)
Gelatine (E441, made by partial hydrolysis of animal collagen)
Locust bean Gum is often used in the Human Food Industry
Also Note- Egg substitutes sold in most supermarkets do contain egg products and should not be confused with egg replacements (Ener-G Egg Replacer is egg free.)
Now it may or may not be possible to use these in a Commercial Bait Making scenario, I just know that some are suitable for home Bait Making use

INFO:
Chicken Farming Facts
There are currently over 20 million battery hens in Britain.
A hen enters a cage at 20 weeks and will remain in the cage for an average of 52 weeks before slaughter.
Each hen has less space than an A4 piece of paper in which to move around, leaving:
- no room to flap and stretch
- no means to dust bathe
- no perch on which to roost
- no nest to lay an egg in (they never actually see what they produce)
70% of eggs produced in the UK still come from battery hens.
Only 6% are produced by barn reared hens.
24% are produced by free range hens.
On average a battery hen lays only 15 more eggs a year than a hen that has been kept in barn or free range conditions.

If this is to be a European ban, will that not open the gates for eggs from outside Europe? How many eggs on supermarket shelves are produced in the UK anyway?
Bring back the lion.
