After reading about a 34lb pike in Angler Mail coming out of a nearby fishery I decided have a look and came close to doing a Nige Williams.

On my second session, 100 meters up the bank, someone had it on a small rubber shad, first cast. It weighed 31lb. Last weekend, on my third session I struggled to get a swim and had no chance.

Most people fishing for pike where using carp indicators. Bobbins and baitrunners ! I think that’s bad angling.

Any thought’s on the ultimate low resistance rigs for spooky pike ? I would appreciate brainstorming a few ideas to help with my hunt.

As long as resistance is constant I don't think it matters really, although these days I only use the baitrunner function on rivers or when fishing free roving lives, both using floats of course.

Decent run rings and a heavy ish lead combined with tight line, rod pointed directly at the bait with a drop off indicator set correctly (touching the spool) so that as soon as a fish takes the bait it drops off leaving no resistance is the best I've found.

Disagree. Had dropped runs with the new FOX Mk 2 bobbins with the metal gate. Too much resitance!

What Dave says! ;\)
Most commercial drop offs are pap, esp' ones made by a small red coated canid. Make your own it's dead easy.

my own indicators consist of Table Tennis balls, a gardner line clip(the ajustable rubber band type)in one end, a looped length of amnesia out the other side to connect to the rest...painted fluro red.

Needs to be at the spool to indicate drop backs. I never use buzzers for piking after an experience many years ago at Lochmaben were the only indication I got from three pike, on the trot, was line twitching. Well hooked too.

The marketed pike bobbins are all s4ite

The 30 came out again two Sundays ago a good 300 meters away around the corner from where I was.

Lancj1….your drop offs seem a bit light, a bit of weight is needed. What do you think mate ?????

Filthy A…I slapped my wrists and pointed the rods at the baits last weekend. Can’t do any harm if my bait drops before it’s nose. Cheers.

Final…………from the lack of response it’s case closed on manufactured drop offs. The basic fox one is spot on. Agree????????

You can bet everyone will be horded around where it last came out. Seen it happen on local waters, one in particular where a whole stretch of bank was full of divvy pikers after the one 30. Needless to say they all blanked yet people at the opposite quiet end of the lake had several fish each.

Unfortunately it sounds like this 30 is going to be hounded to death like.
