3 Day Festival

As the anglers gathered for the 2008 Rolfslake Easter Festival in the car park, it was time for some anglers to be reunited with some angling friends they had not seen for some time.

The weather was something that we could not control, and with a horrible cold, swirling and gusting wind the order of the day,the anglers were hoping for a kind draw out of the wind. As draw time got closer some anglers believed that the winner of the festival could be decided in todays drawbag as with a bad draw today and the weather due to improve on Sunday and Monday, it could be difficult to catch up.

It was strange not seeing Rolf at the lake today, as he would of been chatting to all the visiting anglers and giving them his thoughts for the three days, but he has been poorly and will not be able to come down to the lake this weekend. [Rolf we hope you feel better soon, and all your angling friends will be missing your company - we hope your feeling much better soon and look forward to seeing you].

The format for the Festival is there are three section of nine anglers {sections A, B and C,} which the anglers fish in rotation dependant on their day one draw. The angler that wins their section gets 9 points and the rest of the anglers in that section get 8 points down to 1 dependant on their weight {highest to lowest weight}. All anglers have to weigh in to get at least a point, and the angler with the most points at the end is the Festival winner. In the event of anglers tied on the same points, it will go on total weight.

Day 1

The winner of todays match was one of Rolfslake returning anglers Stan Robak who was drawn on little used peg 15, and who battled with the long pole 13 mtrs fishing into the wind fishing at full depth, fishing corn feeding pellet for his weight of 81-00 and a very deserved win and 9 points.

Day 2

After the strong winds from day 1 the anglers were greeted by a calm lake for day 2 of the Easter Festival and were raring to go. After the tough times the anglers had in the small lake on Saturday, the pegs least wanted were 37, 38 and 5 as there were very few bites to be had on these pegs, so there were no smiling faces as the anglers drew Section A.

Day one winner Stan Robak was one of the first anglers to draw in this section and was faced with peg 37 and a very frustrating 5 hours lay ahead, and also in this lake was Pete Archer who was going to have to endure another bad draw, this time peg 5.

Just as John Bennett got the match under way you guessed it the wind picked up and the temperature got colder, so the anglers that had shelter were now back out in the wind again, and the long pole line again began to look very hard work.

In first place today was Rolfslake angler Jon Walker who was drawn in the big lake and with the wind to his back on peg 18. Jon fished for most of the match on the long pole 14mtrs + to get to the deeper water where the fish were, and fished at full depth fishing a combination of corn and pellet hookbaits feeding very little for his weight of 103-02 and a very deserved win.

In second place was Mark Bedford who was fishing good cold water peg 25 and again fished the long pole fishing corn and pellet catching fish to double figures in his weight of 99-00.

Completing the frame was Mick Lane who was fishing off flyer peg 28 and who had a challenging 5 hours fishing at 16mtrs in the swirling wind which hampered his presentation, but in the end put together a good weight of 89-04 and a section win.

EASTER FESTIVAL DAY 3

As the anglers prepared for day three of the Festival, the weather report for today promised to be sunny spells and a light breeze so the anglers were hoping for an improvement in sport.

Any of the top 10 anglers on the leader board were in with a chance of winning the festival, but with 4 of the top 7 fishing in A section {Matt, Jon, Mark and Clive}the other 6 looked to have a great chance of climbing up the leader board to victory.

When A section was called all eyes were on what Matt Smith the festival leader over 2 days had drawn, and when peg 37 was called out you could feel the sense of relief as there had not been a fish caught on this peg over two days. The other main contenders Andy Johnstone {1 point back} had drawn big lake peg 22, Ian McCulloch {2 points back} had drawn peg 28, Jon Walker {2 points back} had drawn small lake peg 40 and Mark Bedford {2 points back} had drawn corner peg 34.

As the all-in was sounded it was great to see all the long poles go out, with the anglers hoping to catch a fish early just in case the weather changed later in the day. After the first hour most of the anglers fishing from pegs 13-26 had already caught a carp so they could relax a bit and get into a rhythm for the next 4 hours. In the small lake the biggest news to filter down was that Matt Smith on 37 had caught his first carp {12-04} so he was going to score at least a point. Jon Walker was struggling on peg 40 only having caught a few silvers with no sign of carp in that area.

Andy Johnstone was catching carp and silvers steadily so was on for good points as was Mark Bedford on peg 34 by the rope, who was catching smaller carp but more frequently.

As the hours went by you could feel the tension as the anglers tried everything to up their catch rate without over feeding and were rewarded with a few carp and silvers but no-one was pulling away, except Mike Stimpson and Mick Lane who were catching fish for fish on pegs 15 and 26. Mike was fishing the long pole at full depth using corn and pellet hookbaits to catch the winning weight on the day with 118-13 and the top weight in the Festival. In second place on the day was Mick Lane who was fishing right opposite Mike and fell one fish short of a win with 117-06 fishing corn on the long pole. Third on the day was Rob Kite who fished similar to Mick on peg 25 for his weight of 96-01.

After the all out sounded the anglers were recalling their days fishing when news that Matt Smith had eventually caught 5 carp from fishless peg 37 and that Jon Walker on peg 40 had an exciting match when on one occasion when he was fishing down the margins he hooked a 18-14 pike which he managed to land after a struggle which put him 3rd in section.

After the weigh-in was completed and the points were counted, the new Easter Festival winner was Matt Smith who had fished brilliantly on day 3 to weigh 57-12 and 7 points for a total of 24 points and a very deserved win {well done Matt}.

Below are the top 7 anglers over the 3 day venue:

1st Matt Smith - 24 points
2nd Jon Walker - }
3rd Andy Johnstone - } all with 21 points
4th Ian McCulloch - }
5th Mark Bedford - 20 points
6th Mike Stimpson - 19 points
7th Stan Robek - 18 points

Thanks for this excellent report Eddie

The 2nd April 2008 saw the start of the Wednesday Opens and after the last few weeks of Festivals and club matches, the anglers were hoping for the usual big weights that these matches throw up due to the later starts.
Also today there was another local match on the car-park bank and with 4 other pleasure anglers on the lake the fish were spoilt for choice.

Rolf is currently very poorly in hospital and i have passed on his angling friends good wishes for a speedy return home.

Today in first place was Rolfs lakes in-form angler Phil Powell who was fishing peg 18 the last peg on the motorway bank, and who struggled for the first two hours of the match. Phil today was fishing the long pole towards peg 19 and also 16 metres out towards the middle of the lake, fishing on the deck using punched meat and corn feeding pellet heavier than normal for his winning weight of 158-04. In second place was John Bennett who was fishing next to me on peg 14 and for three hours i was ahead of him, but a change to the margins to his right enabled John to pull away in the last hour catching fish to 12lb in his weight of 123-08 by using a combination of corn and big pellet fished on the deck. In third place was Vespe sponsored angler Pete Archer who fished totally different to the rest, by fishing up in the water at depths of between 2 and 5 feet using pellet hook bait feeding very heavy for his weight of 98-04. Eddie Taylor-Green was fourth with 86-02.

The lake is currently in perfect condition, with plenty of fish to be caught all around the lake to a variety of methods and baits.

The Wednesday matches will soon be the only way anglers can fish the lake as it is nearly fully booked throughout May to September with club and league bookings, so please contact John Bennett to book your place and experience some fantastic fishing in great company.

Thanks Eddie for this report.

This being the second 'open' match fished on Wednesday 9th April, the anglers were greeted with lovely sunshine and the car park bank full of pleasure anglers.

With the usual Wednesday regulars not available to fish today it was great to see a lot of new faces at the draw and they were going to experience Rolfslake back to its best.

With fish showing everywhere you were spoilt for choice where to draw, and the anglers hoped that the fish were in a feeding mood.

Rolf continues to be very poorly in hospital and i have again passed on the anglers best wishes in their hope to see him soon.

In first place today was Rolfslake owner John Bennett who had both types of luck, bad and awful as he lost his lucky rig and dropped his new phone into the lake. John also spent 20 minutes trying to recover the top four of an anglers Tourni Pro that had broken off and was seen going around the lake before it eventually sunk to the bottom.

John today was fishing peg 16 in the big lake and for the first hour was catching steady on the feeder using corn hookbait, but a change to the margins fishing the bush to his left using meat increased his catch rate with fish to 14-00 in his final weight of 249-04 and the top weight in matches this year.

In second place was Derek Hammond who was fishing next to John on peg 18 and who fished the margins using corn and meat hook baits fished down the slope again catching big fish in his weight 214-04.

Completing the frame was Jof Rodgers who was fishing next to me on peg 8, and who had an enjoyable day fishing at first at 4 mtrs and then a change later in the match to the far bank {16mtrs against the grasses} increased his catch rate to his final weight of 195-05 and one fish short of the third double ton of the day.

Eddy thanks for this report.

Those are just silly weights, Mick...

Well beats my pounds and ounces on the local canal, a few pounds on local stillwaters and maybe 20lb - 35lb weights on the Trent, Avon and Severn when I was winning matches 30 plus years ago...

Those carp have made a huge difference...;\)

Too true they have Paul. Anyway in the 'John Tilley Invitation' only match fished at Rolfs last Sunday 13th April, Ernie Malyon (Spro) took the top spot with 142-12oz, John Tilley (Cove) was second with 112-04oz and third place went to Mick Hughes (Hydro 2000) with 107-00.

4th Pat Pritchard (Rolfs) 100-00

5th Wayne Chance (Rolfs) 83-12oz

6th Andy Bright (Rolfs) 76-00

7th Dave Strattford-Way (Rolfs) 63-00

8th Paul Verney (Rolfs) 61-04oz

9th Steve Palmer (Rolfs) 57-08oz

10th Pete Arnold (Rolfs) 54-00

With weights this close if you lose a fish you can guarantee you drop down a place.......Great match fishing.

Wednesday 'Open' 16th April

As the anglers come back to Rolfslake in numbers, the popular Wednesday 'opens' are soon going to be the matches to fish as the weights continue to rise, and it will only be a matter of time before the first 300lb weight is recorded. Today also saw the return of anglers that had not fished the lake for a while, and soon you will have to book to get on these matches.

In first place today was Ian McCulloch who was fishing peg 8 in the gap between the big and small lake, and who had a very busy 5 hours. Ian at first fished the pole at short range 5mtrs but after a slow first hour Ian decided to go long 16mtrs against the far bank grasses and was rewarded with a mixed bag of chub to 6lb and carp to 14-08.
Ian fished a combination of corn and meat hookbaits and sprayed pellet over to draw the fish away from their cover, which at times can be very difficult in his final weight of 243-00 and a very deserved win.

In second place was Nick who was fishing in-form peg 15 and who also had an enjoyable 5 hours fishing the long pole on the deck, again fishing pellet hookbait feeding pellet catching big fish to 13-00 in his weight of 192-12 and one fish off the magical 200lb.

Completing the frame was Terry Winstone who was fishing next to Nick on peg 16 and who fished the long pole and the bush to his left fishing corn and pellet for his weight of 149-08.

Top fish of the day was caught by me ETG with a common of 18lb.

The lake is getting better every week with fish to be caught from all parts of the lake on a variety of baits, but punched meat seems to the most popular. The last two hours of the match seem to be the most productive, and most anglers are at least catching 2-3 double figure carp. Rigs fished on the deck at the moment are producing the best weights, but a change to warm weather will see shallow rigs dominate.

The Spring League dates are 6 rounds to be fished on May 10th, and 31st. June 14th, July 12th, August 2nd, and August 16th. So get you teams booked in with John as soon as possible as the places i think will go very quickly.

Will this be the time Rolfs Team Gold are finally defeated?

1st peg 8 IAN McCULLOCH(MAGGOTS END) 243-04

2nd peg 15 NICK (ROLFSLAKE) 192-12

3rd peg 16 TERRY WINSTONE(MAGGOTS END) 149-08

4th peg 10 COLIN WEDGEBROW(FISHERMANS FRIEND) 145-12

5th peg 18 FRANK DONACHIE(COVE) 141-08

6th peg 13 DAVE WIGHTMAN (HYDRO 2000) 128-00

7th peg 14 JOHN BENNETT (ROLFSLAKE/WALKER FLOATS) 120-12

8th peg 40 EDDIE TAYLOR-GREEN(ROLFSLAKE/WALKER FLOATS) 83-04

9th peg 9 JOF RODGERS (BANBURY GUNSMITHS) 76-00

10th peg 4 BILL GALT (FISHERMANS FRIEND) 54-00

'Open' Match fished Saturday 19th April

With the opportunity to fish Rolfslake at the weekends soon to become as rare as me winning a match {due to a full series of club booking}, the anglers were hoping the lake would continue with its current good form. The weather this weekend had turned colder with rain expected, which is not normally a good sign for big weights.

Continuing his current hot form at the lake was John Bennett who put in another quality performance to go with another double ton weight. John today was fishing very little used peg 17 and gave another masterclass of feeder fishing and short range pole fishing. His plan revolved between starting on the feeder fishing corn and meat hookbaits to get a few fish early on, then changing to the short pole after about an hour and a half, again fishing corn and meat catching fish to double figures in his weight of 252-00, and a deserved win.

In second place was Neil Hutchins who was on in-form peg 16, and who fished the long pole and to the bush to his left fished on the deck using corn and pellet. Neil again caught big fish that live under the bush in his weight of 130-06.

Completing the frame was Dave Loseby on peg 10 {a peg that is starting to come back to form} and who fished on the deck using meat and pellet, at a range of 13mtrs catching the 3rd ton of the day with 120-09.

Peg 10 JOHN BENNETT ROLFSLAKE /WALKER FLOATS 252-00 Feeder/ pole meat-corn-pellet

Peg 16 NEIL HUTCHINS ROLFSLAKE 130-06 Pole corn-pellet

Peg 10 DAVE LOSEBY ROLFSLAKE 120-09 Pole pellet

Peg 9 IAN McCULLOCH ROLFSLAKE 78-00 Pole pellet

Peg 18 JIM McCANN ROLFSLAKE 74-00

Peg 14 KEV DALTON ROLFSLAKE 72-00

Peg 13 MICK JONES ROLFSLAKE 59-12 Pole meat-pellet

John informs me that there are a few Opens coming up.
