Try wiggling the connector to the monitor when the problem occurs. I don't think it will help but just give it a try.

I think its probably your graphics card. If it was top end a couple of years ago then the processor on the graphics card will probably have a cooling fan on it, but they are crap and seize up.

Once they seize its only a matter of time before the chip overheats and blows and you get the sort of thing you've got. The good news is graphics cards of that type are cheap now.

dropped it off at the repair shop yesterday just waiting for a quote now

This is deff a hardware problem - as stated above it sounds like the graphics card is over heating.

yeuor right mate it was the graphics card which was faulty i had a new one put in which solved the problem but also caused another one which was basically the computor kept hanging/freezing and evenytually turned out to be the wrong drivers being installed for the new card...sorted now tho
