Time.. There is never enough
A couple of very short visits of less than three hours to fish in have been all i could get together in the last week or so. It has been very noticable of how green and lush the bankside vegetation has become over the space of a couple of weeks, and along with it the movement of the fish.
One afternoon i arrived for a couple of hours session and quickly settled for 'the Pipe' after watching a good mirror 'half out' then go down sending up a mass of pinprick bubbles...it was as though it had waited for me to walk round with a welcoming gesture. A baited rig attached to an half ounce flattened lead was flicked into the very
silty shallow water and i quickly pulled off some slack line.I tend to use one rod in this very tight swim, so as not to spook them in the shallow water. The water rocked and bellowed around the sprinkling of bait for half an hour or so, then the line tightened to the rod tip then fell slack again..Liner? Another couple of fish were in the spot now and another fish tried to lift it'self out of the shallow water right over the bait...Its a Certainty.
I counted down the minutes before i had to reel in and leave..come on, what the f*ck are they doin'?..I picked up the rod and begrudgingly reeled in and bumped a fish with the lead as i reeled in, bow waves shot off in all directions from the shallow corner.
Why didnt i get a pick up?..Inspecting the rig i was somewhat shocked. The tightening of the line shortly after casting in had been a take. The hair was twisted tightly up the hooklink, and the hook was facing up towards the lead...i had been well and truly done. I walked away through the trees and as i passed through a clearing which looked into the spot i had been fishing..an heavy fish fell back into the water...F*ck off, you P*ss takin' b*stards.
Wednesday The mini heatwave saw me back for a flying visit in soaring temperatures in the late afternoon after work, for a bit of floater fishing..i sometimes wonder why i burden myself with such tasks as this but..in the past couple of seasons i have after lots of effort managed to take a few off the top..which is a feat in it'self. I walked into Pipe corner and immediately saw a couple of fish bellowing underneath the pads, and one fish right in the side which was 'tenting' up the pads good style. A piece of fresh crust was carefully lowered into a gap between the pads..the usual occured, the fish stopped immediately. Not a ripple. I could make out the grey shape that had blown its ballast and dropped a couple of feet below the bread..then the crust started to rock as the fish moved up toward the bread taking in large gulps..it dissapeared in one and a short frantic fight resulted in me going in up to my waist to retrieve a strightened hook. Not for the faint hearted..and probably the most exciting aspect of carp fishing..some you win..some you lose.
An afternoon stroll round the 'Park lake' during the hot spell on Thursday saw me rushing back home for a rod and some floaters..iknow ..but temptation is there to taken. Freelined mixers or crust has always been the method for these splash shy lumps and i was grateful for the stunning 25lb mirror that fell for a couple of Winalot ovals. I returned after tea about half six for a quick hours fishing, and there was a guy in the same spot firing mixers all over the water. They certainly weren't there like they had been earlier, though there was one or two taking. I stood right opposte him with less than twenty yards between us and flicked in two soaked Winalot ovals and had a take within a minute.
It came in on the surface all the way to the net and i knew what it was..in the net the 'Grassie' tail walked back out three times and i finally wrapped the net round it so i could take out the hook...it was the 'big one' probably around 26lb. I released the fish straight back into the water as i had done with the mirror earlier in the day.
My vow had been broken not to cast a line at the Park lake fish, and during the evening at home a slight feeling of guilt passed through me.The stroll had sidetracked me..though the sighting of one the big fellas clearing the water, was nice to see..
Focus and commitment to the Bolton gaff, and the next hot spell will have to see me making time to visit the South Mancs lake. Juggling venues is not a good thing to do, as i have proved to myself in the past..

Rain..
The mini heatwave turned out to be just that..a couple of days and then the monsoon season kicked in. Over the weekend i looked at the weather forecast with a smug smile on my face, knowing it would bring a little extra time to fish in. The rain hit the North West during the Sunday night and i was mentally drawing up a plan to attack Monday morning. The expected call from the boss to stay at home never materialised and it turned out to be waterproofs on and hard graft all week on one the biggest houses in Worsely..Bitch.
Word filtered to me from the locals that the Bolton gaff switched on during the week and produced an handfull of fish..Typical, perfect conditions and no chance to get on the bank.
It was late on Saturday afternoon when i arrived for a three hour session and was pleased to see a few lumps showing out over Dave 'Steps' bait, a quick chat and a scan round had to be done before the rain arrived. I walked round to the far side and settled in 'the Point'after seeing a lot of swirls and Pads rocking..Liners galore proceeded to keep me standing out in the rain. The conditions were awful and when i finally realised that the movements were the resident Bream population spawning, i left deflated and sodden to the skin. Incidentally, the Long Common had been spotted showing a couple of days earlier. It was in the small alcove into the pads where Steps was fishing and i stored the information for my next visit.
Monday The rain washed out any chance of work, and the car was loaded early morning, and with the expectation of being able to spend at least eight hours on the bank i hurtled up the A666. One car on the lane, and i quickly recognised it belonging to a guy unfortunately nicknamed 'Sonning'..Which part of he's body is afflicted doesn't need to much thinking about why he is called 'Sonning' 'Sonning' was on 'the Mound' and was only fifteen metres from the pitch i had wanted to be sat in. I walked up and had a look at he's lines to see if he was taking liberties, and i was surprised as they seemed to be fairly straight out in front of him. I'm having the pitch Steps was in and i am sitting it out for my mega session. The cloud was so low and the rain was relentless and after a while it became to feel fairly oppressive. Around twelve o'clock a Mirror slid upwards out of the water then dissapeared without a sound..right over the bait. Steps had fish showing all evening and did nothing a couple of days previous, and they did the same to me. Again i sulked off to the car wounded but not beaten. How do they do that? No,lets not go there, i literally have a million questions and could fill an entire website on the subject. To my self that is what carp fishing is all about, so much to think about, so much to talk about, and so much to try and work out.
The heat is turning up on the Bolton gaff, with a few lads putting in some proper hours after work into the evening and till the death. If i do manage to put a few hours together, swim choice is going to be very limited. At times, it seems that the odds seem to stack up so high against you that it makes it seem as though you are totally p*ssing in the wind.
I have managed to get down the Park Lake after tea for a chat and a brew with the lads. The big fellas are still eluding every ones efforts, and after spotting fish consistantly showing in an area no one was fishing i finally succumbed on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon to have a couple of hours. I had phoned up the Bolton end in the morning and was informed that it was busy, so i decided not to bother travelling up there.
So a dabble in the area i had seen the fish shows on the Park Lake would have to try and quell the nessesity to fish.
I actually felt quite uneasy setting up on a lake that was getting some serious time put in by a number of lads, and a feeling of nervousness quickly subsided after spodding out a couple of kilo of hemp and groats in the spot.I think a bit of the nervousness came in the shape of that i didn't want my new Basias and totally refurbed Infinitys to get dirty and wet.
Anglers that are personal friends of mine know how effective this method of just fishing on hemp and groats that i use is, and i sat back confidently. Just a little thing to think about..the method i use does not involve any type of boilie bait, or other type of bait fished over the mass minute particles. Simple, effective and simply devastating on any water..
The bream moved in and continued to give me some action over the afternoon..i spread the tiny particles over a fairly wide area so as to keep em looking for as long as possible. 5.00 pm and a common halves out over the spread of seed, the bream action slowed to stop as the carp started push them out. A friendly face arrived at 6.00 to do an overnighter in the shape of Jonny Beck..seen owt?. Moments later a good mirror pushed it'self out over the spot. What time you going? Fifteen minutes, i replied. I begged the indicators to sound. Twelve shows or more as i packed down and left Jonny to settle in for the night.I left knowing that it wasn't a case of if..but when?
I don't know how Jonny went on..i hope he will tell the tale of he's nights episode in he's excellent 'Zen and the Art' Blog.

Work is in full swing again..The raining season has doubled up the workload, and when i get the chance to put in a little more time on the bank is an unanswerable question...
