I have a small back garden here in Cheshire, measuring 55 feet long by 30 feet wide.

At the bottom are an oak tree and cherry tree which are both protected(both 30 foot in height), so I can't just hack them down.

I'm looking at keeping koi and looking for advice on what would be the optimum size of pond this small back garden could house... ;)

Also what would be the best base for the pond? There's a foot of topsoil and then clay.

You wouldn't want anything smaller than 2000 gallons Paul to ensure as good water quality as possible, and a koi pond up north really needs to be at least 5 foot deep.
The Interpet guide to Koi is a good read for starting out koi keeping and has a lot of info about pond construction in it. It costs about a fiver I think.

Lee is that 5 foot depth in one area of the pond, but not all over?

When i read up in it it was most of the pond at that depth and most koi ponds i've seen are of uniform depth with virtually vertical sides, but of course its your pond so make it so that it is most appealing to your eye. The thinking behind the depth is because koi are a bit more fragile than 'wild' ones so the extra depth is to give more of a temperature gradient that the koi will feel comfortable in and try to ensure the small amount of water a pond occupies doesn't freeze solid in winter.

Lee's right on his sizes. But I would go for a dished bottom with a bottom drain, it should be easier to keep clean. Budget at least £1000 for filters. Don't under estimate the effort needed to look after a pond, my filters, which probably have the capacity to deal with a pond 3 or 4 times the size of mine still need cleaning once a week.
Size wise you're looking 10ft x 7ft with an average depth of about 5ft.

Having had over 100 gallons dumped onto the floor when a tank cracked in my house.. she may find a pond is the better option
