You're dead right fellas in all of your postings. Those of you who know me, know that I like a good argument, but I couldn't agree with you more. The mags I've taken over do need an injection or two and hopefully we can do exactly that. I'm a lover of carp fishing in general and we will be trying to cater for all needs, both British lovers and foreign. I know I have a hard job to follow. I'd love to be able to tell you when the mags will stop using the commissioned stuff, but Jules has been so prolific in his workload that there's still loads coming in.... this months CW, though, was an excellent read. My aim is to listen to everyones opinion and then try my hardest to get what you want. As for your postings about 'how to...', that's Jules' love and not mine, so expect on-the-bank stuff, stories and all.
Cheers
Simon Crow

PS: To the lad who PM'd me, no I've not spelt Marvelous wrong. That was how the man himself spelt it in his hayday. He said it made an 'L' of a difference...I'm sure Tommy Hearns knows what he was on about!

Carpword is a tired magazine, in its present state it is little more than an advertorial.. 50% is necessary advertising and the balance consists of anglers who have a commercial sponsor to placate.. hence the numerous references to their sponsors' products.. It may well make money but for how long?? it relies on 'newer anglers' buying it.. take a look at the responses on here.. it is a good guide Simon..
Good luck to you.. I think you may need it...

Firstly Simon good luck with the mag and its good to see youve got the guts to come and defend yourself and your mag on this site. Right down to business!

It has to be said that Carpworld is still the best mag on the market, but that says more for the state of the others. The David Hall mags are Ok and feature the cream of our high profile writers but their articles are too short and give away very little juicy info so thumbs down. Big Carp is just crap and since it doesnt even fly the anti-import flag anymore I think it will just continue to fade from view.

Carpworld has some really goo stuff at the moment, thinking Lane (great article this month) Jenkins and Chilly but some of the writers are dire. Does anyone actually read Townley and Murray? I cant imaine even younger carpers bothering with their tosh. They are out to satisfy one person (s) only and that is their sponsors. Dreadful, soulless writing and I would urge you Simon to consider more carefully your choice of writers. Perhaps you could also use your overseas contacts to persuade the likes of Aljin Dinjau (spelling?) to write.

By the way the adverts dont bother me so long as editorial remains at current level.

Oh and please bring back the Fishabil girls!

Ah it takes a gobby big southener to make you sit up and realise that "all in the garden is not so rosey"

Simon no hard feelings.....Just pure "negitive coment".....

But it got you to "come out and play"....

On a personal level Simon.....I really do not care one jot what folk think......I only say what I feel and most of the time its what folk want to say anyway.......

Also a little bit of advice........

Love him or hate him.......Jimbo knows where its at.....

Get him in and you are made fella.........Folk wanna read what is real.....not falsehoods......

Once again....good luck fella.....do it proud......

kind regards JAFFA

Alijn Danau will be the next to be taped after Frank Warwick. Foreign or not lads, this lad knows a thing or two which everyone can learn from - trust me! He's not full time, he's just got a method which works for him which we can all learn from. The series with him will run for several issues like the Frank and Hutchy tapes. We've also got a new series recalling some of the great catches from the past starting next month. It kicks off with Bally's capture of Olive from Wraysbury.
Cheers

I could'nt agree more pete. What is the point of having a glossy full colour mag if seventy five percent of it is a tackle catalogue, and the rest are thinly veiled adverts. When will editors realise that what carp anglers want are articles that make them think about the way they fish and how fish respond. They don't want some numpty telling them that they should do it this way with this bait and with this tackle because its the best, there is no best, there are too many variables,so lets encourage them to think not follow the crowd.Unfortunatly most people involved in the carp industry are there to make a living these days and i'm afraid conscience goes out the window .If losing a lot of the adverts means black and white on poor quality paper,so be it,but get the content right and thinking people will still buy it,the non thinkers can look at the pictures on the other so called magazines.

A bit of an offshoot here from the main arguement but if a subscription based online mag was to make an appearance would anyone consider paying for it or is the idea of fee paying internet material still too much of a taboo subject?
I`ve always wondered if the mags are falling short of potential sales targets by ignoring the net, especially regarding potential overseas sales.
Simon (Crow) stated during his Jan CS show at Hull that there are now 4 off French language carp orientated magazines available.
To me you can look at this in two ways.
1.Desire for the French to have their own carping media focusing almost entirely on their home grown material.
2.A failure of English based mags to take advantage of this potential market by setting up overseas subsidary publishing companies.

The net offers that ability of having a tailor made magazine too suit the individual subscriber/reader (ie.You can selectively subscribe to the kind of articles that you actually want to read, instead for being force fed stuff that your not interested in.)

One professional engineering site i subscribe to currently offers a mixture of free and selective fee paying news and feature articles.

Maybe one for the future eh.....

Hi, from a personal point,I buy carp world, ect.,I remove certain parts(rip them out) then I read whats left, which is about half, this is the only way I can enjoiy my carp mag reading. No disrespect directed at anyone, its just as most of you,I find its an insult! what is put on some of those pages(all mags) for us to digest.
Pva bag.. and a similar hooklink..how many times???
Simon your new young'ish blood is what is needed,if you will listen to you readers as you say..you can only improve what as become very stale..

Just another credit to Crowy for not shirking any challenges whilst coming onto the forum to consult the typical 'pack of wolves' philosphy!

Why does everybody seem to be writing him off before he has started? He is one month into his role, he has already helped budding writers like myself out, as has Jules. In-fact to some of the people who like to get at Jules, some of the 'atmospheric'/'technical' articles that I have had printed where via consultation with Jules so why not get off his back? Maybe you can remember or try not to deny how popular his 'Carp Clinic' was back in the nineties?

I remember that being one of the first pages I turned to. Funnily enough no one complained then, because he was on Selby having it off.

All publications reach a plateaux in popularity, unfortunately more people are likely to complain than praise, I suppose people are afraid of being 'tarnished' for 'kissing ar*e' etc? Well im here, I could have chosen a few magazines to send work to, however for me Carpworld carried the most prestige, depth and variation.

So why not carry on with 'constructive comments' and start to support Simon in his new role without defining it has a 'losing battle' and all that general negative attitude.

Ali,
Don't think people are particulaly writing Crowy off, they are informing him what the public want, they are writing off Carp World because of how stale it is at the moment. Hopefully this thread will help in the construction of new improved Carp World !
