The world of carp fishing in the UK as differs from other countries seems very strange. As I was looking thru the jokes section mostly what I saw were cracks aimed at other named carp anglers. Does each of these big named carp anglers have a following, sort of like a little fishing cult?

Have I stumbled into the Selman camp or are there other so called big carp guys on here. (not that I would know any of their names since I dont regularly get the carp mags)

OK, I give up here, for the last time:

There is no carp fishing in the UK vs other countries as you put it.

You seem to have a big chip on your shoulder regarding this.

Do you not understand what I wrote before regarding our sense of humour, we rib and goad and pull each others legs and joke about each other all the time, and there is no cult thing with people following other anglers.

I am now starting to think or wonder who are because it is now seeming to turn into some kind of strange game.

I will reply to your posts no more, not because you are American or anything else but no doubt you will think so what ever I say, it just seems to be a waste of time because you do not seem to understand that there is no Uk carp fishing vs the US, we are all carp anglers where ever we are.

Good fishing and tight lines my friend, where ever and who ever you are.

Chris S

Hi Chris, I did not mean it as a them vs us thing, sorry, to make my question clearer I should have stated it as "carp fishing differs between the UK and other countries". We dont have any famous carp fishers over here in the States, there are so few of us that we mostly all know each other thru the CAG and carp lists. So does each "named" angler have their own little following? I take it that if two famous carp anglers are on the same water at the same time they might turn off each others bite alarms for a joke but would stop short of glueing the other guys bivvy zipper shut with rig glue? We generally like to throw rubber snakes at each other at 3 in the morning.

Oat,
You appear to have got the wrong end of the stick about the named carp anglers. To make it easier for you I suggest that you veiw our named carp anglers in the same way you veiw your used car salesmen! All of our named, especially our big named, carp anglers are nothing more than glorified sales reprsentatives for Tackle and/or the Bait companies! And then again maybe you could be partially right, they do have a cult following, but only as the High Priests of the great God Commercialism!! Each in his own way leading us, his disciples, onwards and upwards to meet the great God FOX, MAINLINE, NASH, HUTCHINSON, DAIWA, NUTRABAITS, etc etc.

Thanks Wannabe, I thought they were respected, so its just who can catch the biggest carp and get the biggest endorsement and bring in the most viewers or sell the most mags. We have that here in the States, its called BASS MASTERS. I have friends who follow the bass trail, they have several TV shows all trying to sell you the latest lures or boats for catching bass. I tolerate the bass fisherman well though, the ones I know that fish a lot of lakes and rivers tell me where they have seen some big carp over a meter long. I have too many places to fish now, its hard to get to know one water well enough without moving on to the next to try to find the best waters.

Thanks

Oat

Hi Oat,
I think you have got it slightly wrong in that they are only cults in their own imagination. It is quite amusing to see how the bait/tackle plugs change when one of these characters swap their allegiance. The easy answer is to just skip over articles by these people, and if too high a proportion of them write for a particular magazine, then just stop reading the magazine. It can seem quite strange when you dig out some of your old magazines from about fifteen years ago, and realise that it used to be quite possible to write informative and entertaining articles without any product endorsements whatsoever.

I've heared a few guys at one of my local lakes describing one of the "names" as "a right cult".But then my hearing is not what it was.:-))
