Alas the time has come after many years abuse to re varnish and rehip my trusty old pro carbon. She has served me well but i'm a bit unsure about the varnish for the blank.

I got some proper stuff for the whippings (Gibbs Rod Wrap) but when I asked for the varnish for the blank two tackle shops said that model makers polyurethane was the stuff that was actually used. The shop sold this so I bought some (it was only £2). The actual stuff was Humbrol clear enamel paint (the person in the tackle shop assured me it was polyurethane).

Have I done right and saved myself from being ripped off?

I think the best is supposed to be the 'Gibbs 2 Part Varnish', about 7 quid odd a go.

Have you done right ?? Is it worth risking it ??

I used flexcoat for several rods. It was OK for the whippings, but not for the blank. Ask a prof.

The shop had both the gibbs rod wrap and flex coat. I was told that the gibbs was the best so I got that.
