I've had Harrison Ballistas in the past and they are too medium/through action for range work.
You don't have the budget for Daiwa Infinity's or Dictator's, but you can pick up a pair of brand new Daiwa Powermesh 2.75lb test curve rods from this site for less than £200.
Colin Davidson really rates them, and I can give you my personal guarantee that you are buying a rod that is up to the job.

I have just purchased Powermesh rods, after deciding the infinity's were just too much money. I can honestly say, they are everthing I could want and more, well chuffed. I think they are a sensible option for someone on a budget. I have NO connection with daiwa or any retail outlet. Mail me Tom if you would like more details.

Although I am tied with up Daiwa, I can honestly say that I don't know of any other company that subjects its rods to so much bankside and laboratory testing
before they put them onto the market.
I would also never advise anyone to buy a second-hand rod. If it breaks that's it!
In terms of Daiwa, if something goes wrong with the rod or the rod tip snaps etc, under normal fishing circumstances they simply replace it for you.

When is a 'long distance rod' not a long distance rod?
I honestly prefer 'all through-actioned' rods for extreme distance casting. I now only use 13ft,3lb+ test (variable 3lb-5lb) parabolic-actioned rods for all my carpfishing, and my baits usually hit that distant mark, so I'm not not complaining. Rods, like most tools, can depend on personel choice, but I wouldn't like to cast a bait to a far-distant feeding carp, then not have any "feedback" through the rod once that hook is set.

Agreed, Tony.
But not many carp anglers can handle 13' foot rods - me included!
