Do you think the big freeze forecasted for a few winter years ahead will have an impact on the natural order of fish stocks/sizes or could there be a silverlining that the cormorants will have to find pastures new now..with whats forecasted?

About 3 weeks most lakes been frozen Paul.I dont think we give the carp enough credit tho,we know they can survive virtually in mud, like is there any difference of how long the suspended animation lasts..or is the over unnatural stocking level problems created by man our problem or our over inflated diets we give the fish,i think like most things we do..we make things worse..yet breaking the ice with levers regularly(not smashing)is one we dont bother with and what about stocking..how does overstocking of rivers go,something we dont bother doing either.

The problem is organic sediment John. If there's a deep layer and the lake is frozen for a long time it's possible for the water to become anoxic because of the high BOD of the sediment.
We had it happen on one of the ponds I usd to manage, with almost complete loss of the fish. Nothing we could do about it either as it's impossible to get a silt sucker on it (plus too expensive).

Don't think the fact the Cormorants moving onto the Rivers is a a silver lining as these will get raped too. Makes it even worse for up and coming Rivers such as the Mersey, Irwell etc
What's BOD?

what if after five years of this type of winter or maybe less, the cormorants find slightly warmer and more abundant climbs?...by then, the waters would have adjusted too..those that survive the winters can be restocked..those that dont, either cleaned of the sediment or left to naturally wither away...Then restock the rivers..the same mentallity of overstocking like what weve done with lakes..to the point where if cormorants run amock again..it will make little difference to the rivers population,as..rivers can be fished right thru the winter..people will regularly fish holding areas and....cormorants spook easier on the narrower rivers..seen em on the mersey...scary and big deep place, virtually unnapproachable in places to us on foot..but idoubt there will be places where the fish hold where the cormorants wont tread thumbsup
Yip whats BOD?

BOD is biological oxygen demand, basically the amount of oxygen needed by bacteria and suchlike living in the water. Waters with a high BOD typically have a high suspended solid content

timber the serpentine and the res next door have been well locked but there deep waters it's the shallow waters where most damage will be done as the ice layer will be thicker and less water with oxygen for the fish to survive
