How common are bank side tackle thefts?

The reason I ask is because I had a very very lucky escape while night fishing a local lake recently.

Basically I had a visit by 2 blokes who were obviously anglers themselves, and showed an "overinterest" in my tackle.

Fortunately my mate turned up to see how I was getting on and the went. It did point out to me that they had a van in the car park.

Just wondering if anything like that has happened to anyone else?

Dan

I once woke up around 4am at old ford lock in Bow
to find 2 young blokes standing right next to me,2 of my mates were further down the bank they made me jump and me standing up pulling a pick axe handle out of my sleeping bag very quickly made them jump.
think they would have helped themselfs if i stayed asleep
(what were they doing 4am walking around the canals?)

it is a sad fact that thefts happen some violently, and many anglers esspecially the elderly feel safer on the commercial fisheries that are bailiffed and usually swamped with other anglers. Night sessions are also usually safe. Its sad but many locations are unsafe if you fish alone. the only way to halt such happenings are to severly punish the offenders, but in a land where crime seems to pay and sentences are inadiquate the trend will go on. Coppers hands are tied, the crim when caught will be released and will probably get a few days community service. the laws a sham. What do you do stand up and fight or let em walk away with yer tackle? if yer very handy and fancy yer chances then do so. But if not then you will have to let em take it and hope the coppers have a few snap shots of em. I personally believe that they should have hands removed. best bet is to fish with others.

Hello Mart,

Good to hear from you again mate. I was was at Dringhouses lake on the outskirts of York, doing a few nights during the week. Needless to say my trip was cut short.
They were both about 6 foot, with shaved heads. One had a white vest on and addidas track suit bottoms. They were driving an Astra Van, although I admit it could have been an Astra estate. The one who did all the talking had a Leeds accent and a load of tatoos around his neck, and arms.
I haven't been to Selby recently but I have heard the tackle thefts are on the increase.
Do you have any more details on the Selby thefts,

Cheers,
Dan

this has happened a few times to me i was fishing a lake in the central b'ham area, this place was in the middle off no where it was about 4am just put a small common back and turned round to fine 3 blokes standing there one of them seemed cheerful and asked if i had caught anything i started talking to him and the next thing you no i was whack over the head with summit blood hard. 3 hours later i was woken in hospital with 3 cracked ribs and a bust nose. not a nice thing i tell thee. the c*nts where later found by the copper after doing over about 3 more angler and you never guess wht happed to them F*CK ALL belive it or not they got 2 week communtiy service

had it happen on a few other venues but nothing serious woke in the morning to find stuff missing that had been place behind the bivvie on the barrow

after the 3rd time i brought me a nice new rat catcher next time som tea leaf venturs towards my tackle they will have a hole through there forehead

seems to have worked so far not had it happen to me in about a year and still fishing the same venues

ricky

Friend of mine woke one night to see a bloke standing by his rods. The bloke leant forward and switched off his alarm which made that high pitched squeak and my mate leapt off his bedchair and grabbed him. A struggle then took place which saw the bloke take a few digs before he ran off, right into the bloke from the next swim who'd heard the commotion and came up for a look. He grabbed him too and metered out more justice before letting him go.

Thing was, when my mate jumped off his bedchair to grab the bloke, there was someone else standing at the side of his bivvy who legged it when the struggle started.

Be careful out there.
