the motto of the bcsg is.. KEEP IT IN THE DARK AGES.Hope all you bcsg members cant find your matt black gear in the dark and freeze your nads off in those oh so cold tank suits. Secrets are only for anglers who are selfish and dont like any other anglers catching and that includes their friends. The motto for the bcsg really should be,,, Keep it JEALIOUS.................................

Very good post bait doctor... The reason that there is so much openess in the group is that members are not worried that if they ask a question or impart a little knowledge that it will end up being the latest thing on sale in the shop!!
Some of the Rotary letter discussions can get quite involved, I, for one, would not like to see any 'opening up', political involvement or any adjustment to the status quo..
The group is what it is because it has no politics.. it is restricted, it has no constitution.. it is simply a group consisting of experienced carp anglers who meet and share experiences....
Tim has been a member for a couple of years.. maybe, before he goes into print, he should guage other member's views first..
The BCSG has input into many areas... SACG, for instance, but it does not, and cannot, speak for all its members on ANY issue.. as the criteria for joining are based on merit, NOT what you personally think of any one issue in carp angling..

I'd agree with the other Group members.

Keep information and knowledge within the BCSG and between Group members... as Paul says, what would be the point of joining otherwise?

As has already been said, information is shared more freely due to the small nature of the BCSG.

Long may it stay that way.

I have not seen Tim's comments in Carp world yet. What sort of "meaningful statistics" is he refering to, Paul? Does he elaborate at all?

..Would you begrudge even a scintilla of information....are we forever doomed
to wander the path of unmeritorious ignorance?

I was a little puzzled by Tim's comments in the Carpworld mag. My interpretation was he was refering to the old days when study's actualy took place. Hence the name. What everyone must remember is the Group was formed 34 years ago when carp fishing was still at a relative formative stage. Study's were conducted on such things as the effect of the moon on feeding/captures with members being issued with report forms etc. The last study was set up by George Sharman 7-8 years ago and dealth with length to weight ratio statistics. The success of reports like this are due to the willingness and interest of our relatively small (260 members)collective. If we take the trouble to write into our mag 'Rotary Letters'our hard earned information why should it be made available to the masses? To have access to other peoples experience and social gatherings is the very purpose of the Group. To 'Old Hands' the content of our mag is very special and to be cherished along with membership. Hell are we the only mag with NO adverts? 150 of quality relevant dialogue.
If Tim wants to accumilate data or share secrets, he is plugged into the grapevine and is in a prime posistion to set something up himself surely? We are, however, currently looking into the possibility of another 'Sixth' BCSG book featuring all the best no secret articles from the last 13 years mags copy.
If you want to join it is open to everyone to apply if you are an experienced carp angler, See the articles section fro details on this site. We do not view ourselves 'elitist'we all share the same interest we can just communicate at the same level. Dont miss out join today

Tim didn't bother appling till a while ago.. as far as I know....
The trouble with this giving out of ideas is that they are very rarely wholly your own... you pose a question, get many replies and form an answer based on that... I am not going to give away anyone else's edge..!!!
I talk to many anglers and help where I can, although there are some things (see previous paragraph) that I will not divulge..

How does one balance the commercial opportunity of a website and an open forum, with a group that appears to want to separate itself from the general carping public?

It seems a total conflict of interests. One would have to choose to either own the cake or consume it.

Couple with this the ownership of venues that once again have commercial intentions. Surely this elitism removes that connection?

My question wasn`t answered adequately. If you do not wish to tell me what your goal is, then could you say if it is purely to fish on venues alongside other BCSG members? Is it to fish venues that have low populations of fellow anglers? or is it some body of people that create a magazine with their own interested content.

I am seriously interested and not intending to wind people up here. Would somebody just explain to those of us that do not know what the real point of it is.
