In the newspapers and on the radio this morning, there was a report that scientific research has 'proved' that fish can feel pain. The antis have been quick to call for a ban on angling in view of these findings. From reading the details of the research, it would appear to be somewhat dubious. However, the fact that it has been broadcast on Radio 4, Radio 5 Live and been reported upon in great detail in the papers should make us all very wary. The woman scientist who conducted the test says " I don't want to see fishing banned, but hope that anglers will treat fish more humanely" She also said that she was against fish being caught and returned, but that it was alright to catch and kill!!!!
There seems to be a lot of organisations who are desperate to see our sport banned, but who is there to speak on our behalf. The only comment printed against the test results was from a member of the CA. His comment was "The day I can sit down and do a crossword with a trout is the day I'll hang up my rod". Very constructive, I don't think! With spokesmen like this, God help us.
